Shaft Length
Shaft Diameter

This shaft is the foundation of your cleaning system. Every rotating tool in the Pipemade lineup is designed to run off it.

Ready-to-run flex shaft for aggressive drain cleaning and descaling.
Pre-installed brass friction bearings protect the casing from heat during high-speed operation.
Cross-layered hardened spring steel delivers controlled, consistent torque to your chain knockers, brushes, and descaling tools.
Clearly engraved Drill (D) and Tool (T) markings ensure correct setup every time.

Built for trained drain cleaning professionals. Not DIY.

Core Rule

The more bends you need to navigate, the thinner the shaft should be. Thicker shafts deliver more torque but sacrifice flexibility. Thinner shafts offer better flexibility but reduce torque output. If a small diameter shaft is used in a larger pipe and the tool gets stuck, there is a risk of the shaft winding up inside the line. Larger diameters reduce that risk.

1 ¼″–2″ (DN32–DN50) Pipes

Recommended: 6mm (¼″)
Ideal for navigating 90° bends in 2″ lines. Thicker shafts may struggle to pass tight bends in this diameter.

3″–4″ (DN75–DN100) Pipes

Recommended: 8mm (5/16″) for tight bends.
Provides strong flexibility while still allowing effective descaling. If the line is mostly straight and aggressive descaling is required, 10mm may be considered.

4″–6″ (DN100–DN150) Pipes

Recommended: 10mm (⅜″)
Well-balanced option for descaling and blockage removal. If working in 4″ pipes with multiple tight bends, 8mm may perform better.

4″–8″ (DN100–DN200) Straight Lines

Recommended: 12mm (½″) for maximum torque and heavy descaling.
May pass one or two bends, but torque delivery can be affected in complex layouts. If bends are present in this range, consider 10mm instead.

Final Guidance

If bends are your main challenge, prioritize flexibility. If torque and aggressive descaling are the priority and the line is straight, choose thicker.

It’s tempting to choose the longest shaft available “just in case.”
With flex shafts, that usually works against you.

Why Longer Shaft Isn’t Always Better?

  1. Weight
Flexible shafts carry noticeable weight per meter. Bringing a 30m (100ft) shaft to a 5m (16ft) job adds unnecessary bulk and fatigue.

  2. Power Loss
The longer the shaft, the more power is required to transfer torque to the tool.
Running a 30m shaft with only 5m deployed means the remaining coiled shaft still needs to rotate. That extra resistance can strain or even burn out your drill.

  3. Most common blockage depth
Most blockages occur within 20m (65ft) of the entry point.
Cleanouts are commonly spaced around 25m (80ft) apart.

What we recommend

Choose the shaft length that covers about 80% of your jobs.

For the remaining 20%, add a second shaft and connect them with a Shaft-to-Shaft Connector when longer reach is needed. You can even combine different diameters.

This setup gives you:

  • Better mobility
  • Less weight to carry
  • Improved torque transfer
  • More control in bends

Bonus Tip

If you’re planning to use a Shaft Carrier, confirm that your chosen length and diameter fit inside it. That info can be found in carrier's product images and description.

Important Before First Use

Due to shipping regulations, flexible shaft sets are delivered dry. Before first use, fully lubricate the shaft with:

  • Common machine oil
  • PTFE-based lubricant

Running the shaft without proper lubrication will increase internal friction and reduce service life.

Ongoing Maintenance

To maximize lifespan:

  • Clean the shaft every 2–4 weeks depending on usage
  • Re-lubricate after cleaning
  • Keep dirt and debris away from the exposed shaft

Proper maintenance significantly reduces internal friction and heat buildup.

Why Lubrication Matters

Flexible shafts operate under torsional load, especially when navigating bends.

The more bends in the line, the higher the internal strain.
Lubrication reduces friction between layers and helps preserve torque performance.

Casing & Friction Bearings

Each set includes brass friction bearings installed at both ends of the shaft casing.

These will:

  • Reduce heat load on the casing
  • Prevent casing damage during high-speed operation
  • Help protect the shaft from dirt intrusion

These products are intended for trained drain cleaning professionals.

Pipemade flexible shafts are manufactured using a cross-winding method:

  • 4 + 3 layers of high chromium spring steel
  • Opposing pitch angles for improved torque control
  • Central mandrel core structure

This construction balances flexibility and torsional stiffness while maintaining consistent power transmission.

Performance Characteristics

The shaft’s performance depends on:

  • Wire quality and material composition
  • Number of layers and winding method
  • Shaft diameter
  • Heat treatment process

These factors influence:

  • Torque delivery
  • Flexibility
  • Torsional stiffness
  • Performance under variable speeds

Bend Radius

Each shaft is designed with a specific bend radius. Operating well within its bend limits reduces internal friction and extends lifespan.
The tighter the bends, the greater the internal strain.

Shaft Casing Dimensions

6mm (¼″) shaft
Inner diameter: 8mm
Outer diameter: 10mm

8mm (5/16″) shaft
Inner diameter: 10mm
Outer diameter: 12mm

10mm (⅜″) shaft
Inner diameter: 12mm
Outer diameter: 15mm

12mm (½″) shaft
Inner diameter: 15mm
Outer diameter: 18mm

Length Measurement

The listed shaft length is measured at its shortest intersection point with the casing.

Shafts are delivered slightly longer to accommodate tool attachment.
If using short tools in small pipes, trimming excess exposed shaft may improve performance and prevent twisting outside the casing.

Intended Use

Strictly intended for trained professionals in drain cleaning and sewer rehabilitation.
